About Us
3 Points is a sporting project in Manchester designed to use team sports tournaments to bring together young people from different regions, backgrounds and ethnicities. We run 5v5 basketball tournaments for young people aged 15-21 with randomised teams which encourages the young people from different areas of Manchester to come together, socialize and ultimately learn off each other.
When we began, we noticed the provisions for basketball in Manchester weighted more to south Manchester, this meant that other regions were underserved in comparison. Furthermore, we discovered that young people in Manchester were quite immobilized, so as a result tend to remain isolated in their communities. Some of these communities seemed to be disconnected both internally and externally. Our project addresses this problem of poor community cohesion and lack of mobility in Manchester by hosting 5v5 basketball tournaments in different areas of Manchester; hence encouraging young people to travel and explore outside of their individual territories. Our devised method of randomly selected teams pushes young people to socialise with other young people different from themselves. All the while promoting an active lifestyle of sports and networking.
WHAT WE DO
We organise sporting Tournaments across different areas of Manchester featuring randomised teams, that enables young people to interact with other young people with the aim of improving their confidence, interpersonal skills and networks whilst they take part in a sport that they love and enjoy.
The element of the randomised team in our Tournaments sets us apart from any other league, organisation or competition as we encourage the young people to make new friends quickly, and develop the ability of teamwork & unity. When planning our Tournaments, creating the best atmosphere for young people to build these new connections and networks is our priority.
HOW WE STARTED
We started as one person with a personal desire of bringing young people together to socialise, learn but also share opportunities and ideas. That one person took that idea and with the help of The Agency, materialised it into a small basketball project in Moston/ Harpurhey Manchester. After the first two event with the randomised team were a success in North Manchester, we noticed how young people from all over Greater Manchester were travelling great lengths to be part of this community of players we had established- this has been our constant motivation throughout the course of this project.
Over the course of 2 years which comprised of 3 events and with the help of a great team, we have grown this idea of community cohesion and networking into a hub of young people from very different areas and backgrounds from across Greater Manchester coming together and working together but at the same time linked by a common factor- 'their love for sports'.
